There are a number of advantages to buying used construction equipment, but you only really get those benefits when you buy carefully and know the warning signs to look for, because not every used piece of equipment is a good deal.

Trouble starting, or smoke while starting are both causes for concern. While you are taking a look at the engine pay attention to both the coolant and oil reservoir. If these fluids are mixing with one another you don't want the machine.
While the machine is running take a good look at the bottom of it to see if any fluid is leaking. Leaking fluid is usually a bad sign, and although hoses are pretty easy to fix, if you can't locate the leak it isn't worth the risk.
Look out for any welds on the arms or other major parts of the machine that will be taking heavy abuse. Welds are not as strong as the original metal, and if the machine needed welding it has been beat up badly. Also look out for any loose pins or bushings or any parts of the machine that have seized up. While these aren't major problems themselves, these issues happen on machines that aren't maintained well and are often indicative of other issues.
Just make sure to keep your eyes open when you are purchasing used construction equipment from a dealer that you aren't familiar with yet. Save yourself some time and trouble by locating a used construction equipment dealer and buying from them. Typically they offer warranties, and are much more reliable to deal with.
