Cancer, in medical science demonstrated as malignant
neoplasm, includes a broad range of diseases caused by the unregulated
division and growth of cells at the expense of the surrounding cells.
Cell division is a gene controlled process; growth and replenishment of
the human body is achieved through cell division, however, due to
different reasons this natural gene controlled mechanism is disturbed in
some cells, and they start to divide and grow exponentially in an
uncontrolled fashion causing a tumour. Every tumour is not cancerous; benign tumours remain enclosed within the particular area of formation, whereas malignant forms of the tumour
shows uncontrolled growth and can even spread to other parts of the
body through the lymphatic system or the bloodstream. Until now there
have been over 200 different forms of cancer identified in humans. In
the year 2007, cancer caused 7.9 million human deaths across the world.
Fighting Cancer
Research is on-going for new and more effective methods of treating
cancer and the results of this research are promising. Medical science
has come up with excellent and effective treatment options for treating
cancer at an early stage, and, in fact, cancer is no longer considered
as an untreatable disease. Actually, the number of people who had been
diagnosed with some form of cancer in some stages of their life are
still living a happy life with their family and this is increasing day
by day across the world. Some of the credit for this obviously goes to
medical science and some of the best cancer care centers.
The treatment of cancer may include radiation therapy and with recent
research there are different types of radiation therapies that might be
suitable for different patients according to their stage of cancer and other health factors
Radiation oncologists also use IGRT or image-guided radiation therapy that helps in a better delivery of radiation to the cancer as tumors can shift between treatments owing to movements during breathing or differences in organ filling.
